The photographs featured are part of a series Divola has worked on since 2015 from the interior of an abandoned air force base in the California desert: ruined spaces and crumbling walls reveal layers of paint and plaster that contrast with Divola’s interventions and paintings. A set of previously unpublished pictures from this series was published in Electra 15, together with an essay by Afonso Dias Ramos. Blue with Exceptions uses the ruin to restore a direct relationship between photography and painting, sculpture and installation, thus declining a distinction between witness and participant, intervention and documentation.
