Daniel Blaufuks

Photographer Daniel Blaufuks is part of Portugal's official presence at the Osaka 2025 Exhibition, with the presentation of his Japanese Journals project. The photographic campaign revealed in this work was recently carried out by Blaufuks in Japan, with images captured in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe Koyasan, Hiroshima, and Himeji. The photographer has added the words of haiku poems by the great poet Matsuo Bashō to these images, creating a dialogue of mutual and multiple resonances.

In its 29th issue, the summer edition, Electra magazine has published an exclusive selection of images from this project in the ‘Book of Hours’ section. This work was the result of a partnership between Electra and the Portuguese General Commission for Expo 2025 Osaka. Electra had already published Blaufuks' photographic diary ‘The days are numbered’ (Electra 9), recorded during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project now on display continues Blaufuks' research into recurring themes in his work – such as archive, memory, and time, both personal and historical – and their representation.

Electra will be present at ARCOlisboa 2026 from 28 to 31 de May, and Lisbon book Fair, from 27 May to 14 June.
